Hamburg/Busan, 30 August 2023 - The traditional Korean shipyard HJ Shipbuilding & Construction in Busan announced the ceremonial naming of two environmentally friendly 5,500 TEU container ships commissioned by MPC Capital on 30 August 2023. These vessels are part of a six-ship series that feature innovative ecological designs and a significant reduction in consumption.

On 30 August 2023, the first two 5,500 TEU eco-design newbuildings in the six-ship series initiated by MPC Capital were christened at the traditional Korean shipyard HJ Shipbuilding & Construction in Busan. The two ships are being built for their Norwegian owner Ocean Yield.

The vessels feature state-of-the-art specifications and an environmentally friendly design that reduces consumption by 40% and enables the conversion to carbon-neutral operation based on green methanol. The vessels comply with EEDI Phase 3 and NOx Tier III standards.

After delivery, both vessels will embark on a 7-year charter with ZIM under their charter names: MS ZIM DANUBE and MS ZIM GANGES.

In February this year, the yard also signed contracts for two 9,000 TEU container ships powered by methanol, which meet the highest environmental standards and lead to a reduction in CO2 emissions. Methanol-powered ships emit 25% less carbon than conventional bunker C oil ships, helping to reduce the environmental impact of shipping.

After delivery, both vessels will embark on a 7-year charter with ZIM under their charter name.
